Two memory components keep the conversation coherent, so the bot doesn’t “forget” what the user said two messages ago. When a question needs fresh info, a web search tool (built on HTTP requests) can fetch it so the agent can respond with something more grounded than a guess. Finally, the workflow replies back to the chat, and for tricky cases you can route the conversation to Telegram so a human can take over with the full context.

The AI agent builds context before answering. The Conversational Agent pulls in the current message, consults the memory buffers, and prepares the best next response instead of treating every message like a fresh start.

When it needs outside information, it searches. The Web Search Tool uses an HTTP request to fetch relevant information, which the agent can use to answer “What’s your policy?” or “Do you support X?” more reliably. This is the difference between a generic bot and something you can actually put on a live website.

The workflow replies, and escalates when appropriate. Send Chat Reply returns the response to the user. If you choose to route edge cases to Telegram, your team gets a handoff with conversation context so you can finish the job quickly.

Step-by-Step Implementation Guide

Step 1: Configure the Chat Trigger

Set up the inbound chat entry point and welcome experience so conversations can start immediately.

  1. Add and open Incoming Chat Trigger.
  2. Set Public to true.
  3. Set Initial Messages to Hi there! 👋 My name is Sofia. How can I assist you today?.
  4. In Options, set Title to Welcome to Sofia and Subtitle to Start a chat. We're here to help you 24/7..
  5. Set Response Mode to responseNodes, Allowed Origins to *, Input Placeholder to Type your question.., and Load Previous Session to memory.
  6. Optional: Paste your custom CSS into Custom Css if you want to match the provided UI styling.
  7. Connect Basic Session Memory to Incoming Chat Trigger as the AI Memory input.

Tip: If you change Load Previous Session from memory, previous chat history won’t be available to the assistant.

Step 2: Connect OpenAI

Configure the language model that powers the assistant’s responses.

  1. Add and open OpenAI Chat Model.
  2. Credential Required: Connect your openAiApi credentials.
  3. Set Model to gpt-5-nano.
  4. Set Temperature to 0.7.
  5. Connect OpenAI Chat Model to Conversational Agent as the AI Language Model.

⚠️ Common Pitfall: If responses are empty or fail, re-check that OpenAI Chat Model has valid openAiApi credentials.

Step 3: Set Up the Conversational Agent

Define the agent behavior, attach memory, and enable web search tooling.

  1. Add and open Conversational Agent.
  2. In Options, set System Message to You are a helpful assistant.
  3. Connect Context Buffer Memory to Conversational Agent as the AI Memory input.
  4. Set Context Buffer MemoryContext Window Length to 10.
  5. Connect Web Search Tool to Conversational Agent as the AI Tool.
  6. In Web Search Tool, set URL to ={{ /*n8n-auto-generated-fromAI-override*/ $fromAI('URL', ``, 'string') }} and Tool Description to Search using Bing example: [YOUR_URL].

Tip: Context Buffer Memory, Web Search Tool, and Basic Session Memory are AI sub-nodes. Add any required credentials to the Conversational Agent (parent) rather than the sub-nodes.

Step 4: Configure the Output Node

Send the agent’s response back to the chat UI.

  1. Add and open Send Chat Reply.
  2. Set Message to ={{ $json.output }}.
  3. Connect Conversational AgentSend Chat Reply (main output).

Step 5: Test and Activate Your Workflow

Run a controlled test to verify the full chat flow and then enable the workflow.

  1. Click Execute Workflow and open the chat interface from Incoming Chat Trigger.
  2. Send a test message and confirm that Conversational Agent returns an output and Send Chat Reply posts it to the chat.

  • OpenAI credentials can expire or be restricted by your org settings. If things break, check your OpenAI API key permissions and billing status first.
