How It Works

A chat request comes in. The Chat Message Intake node captures whatever the user typed, even if it’s just one line like “monitor support inbox and summarize tickets.”

Knowledge gets pulled in. The agent consults your Pinecone index for relevant n8n docs, and it can also use SerpAPI to find current examples or references when the request is niche.

The workflow template is generated and checked. The AI Agent drafts the node graph using OpenRouter (GPT-4o by default), then an OpenAI Validator double-checks structure, field names, and connectivity so the template won’t fail on import.

You receive a downloadable JSON file. A small extraction script slices clean JSON from the agent output, then n8n renders it to a file (template.json) you can download and import immediately.

Step-by-Step Implementation Guide

Step 1: Configure the Chat Trigger

Set up the inbound chat trigger that starts the agent workflow, and keep a manual trigger for testing crawl tasks.

  1. Add Chat Message Intake as the primary trigger for incoming chat messages (no parameters required).
  2. Keep Manual Test Launcher connected to Set Crawl Endpoint for manual test runs.
  3. Optionally leave Flowpast Branding in the canvas as a documentation note (no runtime impact).

Step 2: Connect AI Services & Credentials

Attach the language model, search tool, and vector database services used by the agent, and ensure all required API credentials are configured.

  1. Configure OpenRouter Chat Engine and connect it to Workflow Agent Core via the AI language model port. Credential Required: Connect your openRouterApi credentials.

  5. Connect OpenAI Embedding Maker to Pinecone Retrieval Tool via the AI embedding port. Credential Required: Connect your openAiApi credentials.
  6. Connect OpenAI Embedding Maker B to Pinecone Index Trainer via the AI embedding port. Credential Required: Connect your openAiApi credentials.
  7. Configure OpenAI Validator with Model set to o4-mini-2025-04-16 and connect it after Workflow Agent Core. Credential Required: Connect your openAiApi credentials.

Tip: OpenAI Embedding Maker and OpenAI Embedding Maker B are connected as embeddings for the Pinecone tools—confirm their credentials are added on those embedding nodes, not on the Pinecone nodes.

Step 3: Set Up the Agent & Preferences

Define the agent’s default preferences and system instructions so it can build workflows based on user requests.

  1. In Assign Agent Preferences, add assignments for:

Set the crawl URL and build the wait/retry loop that checks for completed crawl results.

  1. In Set Crawl Endpoint, set URL to https://api.firecrawl.dev/v1/crawl/[YOUR_ID].
  2. In Fetch Crawl Output, set URL to the expression {{ $json.URL }}.
  3. Connect Fetch Crawl OutputPause 30 SecondsRetrieve Crawl Results to allow the crawl job to complete.
  4. Route Retrieve Crawl Results into Conditional Branch, then wire the “not ready” path to Pause 10 Seconds and back to Retrieve Crawl Results to form the retry loop.
  5. Route the “ready” path from Conditional Branch to Convert Raw to File for downstream indexing.

⚠️ Common Pitfall: Replace [YOUR_ID] in Set Crawl Endpoint with your real Firecrawl crawl ID, or the HTTP request will fail.

Step 5: Validate, Extract, and Package JSON Output

Validate the agent output, extract the JSON, and prepare files for storage and indexing.

  1. In OpenAI Validator, ensure the second message content uses the expression {{ $json.output }} to validate the agent’s raw output.
  2. In JSON Extraction Script, keep the provided JavaScript for extracting JSON from code fences.
  3. In Map Extracted JSON, set Mode to raw and JSON Output to {{ $json.extractedJson }}.
  4. In Render JSON File, set Mode to each, Operation to toJson, and Binary Property Name to =.
  5. Connect Convert Raw to FilePinecone Index Trainer for indexing of crawl results.
  6. Connect Recursive Text SplitterStandard Document LoaderPinecone Index Trainer to enable document preprocessing before indexing.

Step 6: Test & Activate Your Workflow

Validate the full flow using manual triggers and then enable it for production usage.

  1. Click Execute Workflow on Manual Test Launcher to test the crawl loop and Pinecone indexing path.
  2. Send a test message to Chat Message Intake and confirm Workflow Agent Core produces output that passes through OpenAI Validator and Render JSON File.
  3. Check for successful JSON extraction in Map Extracted JSON and a generated file in Render JSON File.

  • Pinecone credentials and environment settings are easy to mix up. If retrieval suddenly returns nothing, check your Pinecone index name and API key in n8n credentials first.
